Created for Expressions Dance Company's season of 'Propel' at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts.
HOLLOW LANDS is a response to the sculptural light instillation Through Hollow Lands, by Etta Lilienthal. It is a multi-layered response that teeters between abandonment and structure. “I was interested in the idea of coming to the brink- a precipice of internal landscapes. I found this a powerful and evocative image and the collision of physical intentions ruptures and intensifies these internal struggles.” Lisa Wilson
“As we live our precarious lives on the brink of the void, constantly coming closer to a state of non-being, we are all too often aware of our fragility”

“Hollow Lands by established choreographer, Lisa Wilson gives us an incredibly dynamic piece where the dancers engage, interact & are stimulated in, around and by a delicate, geometric light installation. The ebb and flow of dancers is so seamless, each dancer sparkles and as a group they are electric.”
Alison Russel Dancetrain magazine
“Hollow Lands, Lisa Wilson’s response to visual artist Etta Lilienthal’s light installation Through Hollow Lands, made a strong opening.
Wilson’s exploration of the precariousness of our existence, living “on the brink of the void”, is clearly articulated in movement that segues from the energetic and complex to the serenely controlled. The work begins with a mesmerising solo of intricate complexity performed by Alana Sargent (formerly of Sydney Dance Company), who delivered with a laser-like clarity.”

“In a nutshell, 'Propel' 2017 is brimming with creativity, and showcases the latest in daring contemporary dance from Australia’s Lisa Wilson, Amy Hollingsworth, Elise May and China’s Xu Yiming
(in Hollow Lands) ….. the white tubes of light that define the space are used to great effect with the dancers moving within and through the frame that blinked and flashed and changed to provide a movable dimension…. this beautiful work highlights the skill of the six dancers who work seamlessly together.”

“The cinematic Hollow Lands opened the evening …. The light structure was used to stunning effect on the darkened stage – the sizzling, neon-light labyrinth blinking in and out of existence bringing to mind the feeling of displacement…. Wilson uses it to convey the internal landscape where we find ourselves at the brink of existence, with the dancers reacting to and teasing the shifting barriers of light, almost like neuro blockers that hinder their way forward. The structure creates a feeling of overwhelming size and complexity while at the same time feeling fragile and impermanent.”
